A roof replacement can involve far more than simply removing old tiles or slates and installing a new covering. In this substantial project, completed during summer 2025, the existing roof had deteriorated to the point where a complete replacement was necessary.
The roof was showing serious signs of structural failure, with areas approaching collapse. Rotten timber, severely deteriorated A-frames and significant deformation meant that retaining the existing roof structure was no longer a suitable option. The project therefore involved stripping the roof back, rebuilding key sections of the supporting structure and installing a completely new roof.
The first stage was the careful removal of the entire existing roof. Given the condition of the structure, this required careful planning and attention to safety throughout the process.
The existing roof timbers had suffered from significant rot in various areas, while the original A-frames had deteriorated considerably. Years of exposure and timber degradation had caused deformation, leaving the structure unable to provide the level of support required.
Removing the old roof allowed the full extent of the deterioration to be assessed and provided access to the underlying walls and supporting structure.
Once the roof had been removed, areas of the supporting walls were also found to require attention. Sections were rebuilt where necessary to provide a sound foundation for the new roof structure.
Having a suitable supporting structure is essential when carrying out a complete roof replacement. Rebuilding affected sections before installing the new timberwork helped ensure the replacement roof had a stable and appropriate base.

New roofing felt provides an additional layer of protection beneath the roof covering, while the battens provide the fixing framework required for the slates.
The roof was then finished with slate, creating a durable and traditional-looking exterior that complements the character of the property.
Installing a completely new roof covering over a new structural framework provides a much more comprehensive solution than carrying out isolated repairs to an ageing roof that has already suffered significant structural deterioration.
